This chapter opens with a conversation between a doctor and an interpreter. The doctor tells the interpreter not to worry about the job because he considers maintenance to be a part of his job. The interpreter asks the doctor if he is sure that he did not cut corners with the new doctors sent to him by the surgeon, and the doctor replies that he was only interpreting the doctor's words. He then tells the doctor that he is the one who pays him less than he deserves, and that the doctor underpays him. He tells the family that he has to finish all the patients in two days because he is on vacation and has to take care of multiple patients at once.
