In the vainney shop, Valere tells Marie that he looks a lot better than he did before. He's even gotten a haircut and bought new clothes, but he's still not sure how much of a savings he has. He wonders if the police will come after him and his family, and if they'll be able to get rid of him. He also tells her that he wants to find out what's wrong with Cyrano. He doesn't think he can get her back to work. Valere says that there's nothing he can do about it, and that he'll have to withdraw from the guild. He says that the guild needs 20,000 troops to cover the cities of the world, and there will be "tragic losses" as a result of the purge, but it's for the best. He asks Marie if she wants to be a part of the guild, and she says no. She's worried that the purge will weaken her family. He tells her to get a grip of her self, because the people of the city are going to kill her family to make her feel better. She says that she's just a "mech anized soldier" , but she knows that it isn't her fault.
