The chapter opens with a description of a mechanical world that has been built 1,000 years before. It is inhabited by a non-government organization that fights against the faults of the earth. The narrator tells us that the organization is called the "Clocksmith Second Class" and that it has decided to "purge this city in forty-two hours" .
