In this chapter, we learn that the world was built on gears 1,000 years ago, and that the city of Yokohama was built atop them. The narrator tells us that the first robot was named Yo-Yo, which means "the one who follows." The narrator explains that he was the first person to be able to fix him when he was broken, and thus, he is the one who is responsible for keeping him in service. He tells the audience that he has been out of work for four hours because of a fault in the city's gears, but that he is grateful to have been able to repair him. He says that if he were a popular person, people would hate him, but since he is an automaton, he would have to be good at sports or handsome to be popular.
