In this chapter, the protagonist tells the story of his first encounter with the patient, who was a young boy and accompanied by his father. The protagonist tells us that the patient's father and son have not come back for fifteen years, and that the protagonist has become a "authority on the industry" . The doctor agrees to wait, and asks the protagonist if he used to be an actor.
