About This Chapter
It's the night before the art exhibition, and the two of them have decided to go to the exhibition together. The narrator asks the girl if she's sure she doesn't want to go with him. The girl says she'd rather not, but the narrator tells her not to worry, because she'll be alone with the man she loves. She also tells the girl that she already knows that the teacher's brother is also there, and that he's not willing to come back with her. The two decide to pretend that they don't know each other, since they're both so young and so impressive. They're also about to get married, the narrator says, so they can inherit the family's business. He also tells her that alain has gone to see him to see if he'll marry her, and she says that he hasn't. She asks the man to come pick her up at the exhibition. The man says he can meet her there in ten minutes, but she wants to know what's going on. She tells him that the girl is feeling very uneasy, and asks him to leave. The teacher says that she can't ask for help, but that she has to ask for it. She says that if she had asked earlier, she would have gotten mad, and now she wants her true happiness. He says that the man is still unclear about what happened, but he will be able to meet the man.
