The Governess tells her son that her father wants to see him one last time before his mother's death. Before her mother died, her father forbade the Governess and her brother to see her because she had a difficult childbirth. He was obeying his "animal instincts" , she says, and so he is her biological father. She tells him that she will think of going back to Europe when her father is gone.
