"My carnivorous young boyfriend" is the title of this chapter. It's about three years after the narrator joined the company, and he's still in love with his "young boyfriend" . He tells us that "most of my contemporaries" at the company have moved on, and that "glance" has won "lots of company awards" for his "reliable and popular" work. He's also been called "an outstanding century" , and the narrator says that he doesn't want him to "outshine" him. He wants him to keep his "talent" and not let "him outshine" him . When the narrator sees that the young man is staring at him, he shoves him away, saying that he was "spurning for a kiss." He says that "there are lots of men in the office" who admire the young woman, but that she's "way out" of the company's league. The narrator says he never knew that fear was so important in love, but now that he loves her, he can't help but think of her as his "dear one." He asks if something has happened to her, but she says that it's not. They go out for dinner, and then spend the night together at his house.
