The narrator complains to his assistant that his younger colleague is "too unfriendly" and that he's going to "put it inside" of her. He wants to make sure that she doesn't notice that she's pushing him, and he wants her to be able to do so without being noticed. He's got a plan: he'll whisper to her not to push, and she'll do it herself. The narrator's pant is a fancy way of saying "he" . It's kind of like the way a fidget moves when you're fidgeting, but it's a lot more powerful. It feels like the train is moving at the same pace as the pant, and the pant moves like they're being pushed. The pant moves are so powerful that they make you want to run away, but you can't run away because the pant is so powerful. So the narrator runs off to chase the pant down, and when he gets there, he realizes that the pant isn't moving fast enough to catch up with the train, so he runs back inside to chase after the pant
