The scene opens with a soliloquy by the Governess. She tells the audience that she is in her mid-thirties, and that she has just returned from a trip to a temple where she was supposed to be the consort of a prince. The Governess asks the audience to imagine what it must be like for her to be in love with a prince, and to imagine how it must feel to be a princess consort.
