About This Chapter
At the beginning of Chapter 44, we learn that the chief of the gili tribe is running around like a "cold, emo-tionless robot" . He's also running around with a giant nose, which makes him look like a giant lioness. The girls are the real leaders of the tribe, says the chief, because they do all of the hunting themselves. They don't depend on the males for anything, he says. The gili camp is usually three days out, but right now, they're about to look at a week. The chief says that the Americans are providing training for them, and that they've already kicked the hornet's nest. He tells the girls to "tuck your tail back" when they get back to their families, and to tell them that they said hello to them when they came home. He says that even though they used to be called the "small work ants" , they are now a proud people, unlike you. They're going to kill all of your family members, even your little ones, and they'll send you to join them in hell. He adds that he knows the chief cares for his family, but he's frightened of the way the chief's training is going. The professor is the guiding light of the people, the chief says, and without him, they would still be in the fields " raking trash right." The professor says that he is the writer of the story, and all of it unfolds exactly in accordance with his script.
