The next morning, de Bois-Guilbert wakes up in the middle of the night. He's not sure what's going on, but he's pretty sure that his daughter is dead. He doesn't know how to react to this news, so he starts to freak out. He can't believe that his son-in-law is getting away with murder, and that he was supposed to be protecting his daughter from it. He also realizes that the whole world is watching him.
