About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess complains to her husband that she's feeling "particularly worn out" after drinking tea the day before. She tells him that she fell asleep the night before and that her back and stomach ache. He tells her that he doesn't know if it's a dream or a real one, but that she has opened his eyes to a "new side of you" . The Governess blames her husband for the whole thing, but he insists that he didn't say anything to her in the dream. He says that he won't let himself act like that in the future and that he'll make sure he never does it again. He also says that if he ever has to carry his own wife, he's not going to be able to conquer the world. He'll have to alter his original plan, he says, because his mom is still coming to pray. He asks her if she is very devoted to him, and she says that she is, but she still insists on going to pray . He reassures her that even if he has to battle for his career, maintaining his physical appearance is important. He has not yet had a child or been in a confinement period, so he must not gain weight. He promises that he will always love his wife no matter what she looks like.
