The Governess tells the Governess that he has come to see the parents of the missing boy. They are in shock over the murder of their daughter, and they do not have the money to hold a proper funeral. He tells her that he will try to arrange a letter exchange between the two of them. He also tells her about his parents, who were top police officials in the state before they married. One day, however, both of them suddenly quit the police force. He wonders why they would want to hide the fact that one of them was a child. He asks if he can find out more details about the birth of the child.
