The scene opens in a public place, where Mr. Lorry is talking to his wife. He asks Lorry to sit down and listen to his side of the story. He wants to know Lorry's reaction to the news that his wife has been arrested for plotting against him and his sister. He tells Lorry that he has only been kidnapped three times in his life, and that his sister has lost her love for him. He agrees to spare his sister from the charges against her, but Lorry warns him that if he does not drop the charges, her life will be in prison for ever
