It's late, and Mr. Cai is getting ready to go to the kitchen. He's worried that xiang is getting too embarrassed, and he wants to make sure that they bring him into the family. He tells Cai to go outside and have some fun with xiang, and Cai says that he's just there to help out. Cai asks if he usually cooks by himself, and she says that she used to, but she's learned to cook by herself when she had xiang. She says that if her mother knew that she was praising him, she'd be happy. Cai thinks that's a good thing, because she reminds her of painful memories of her mother's death. He says that his heart is beating fast, and that he loves xiang more than before. He asks Cai to fold some cabbage and wash it. Cai says he'll do it well, and then he falls asleep. He wakes up and tells his father that Cai is dreaming of him. Cai tells him to take xiang to his room to sleep, but he doesn't want to confess yet, because he'd get a cold if xiang slept in his room
