In this chapter, Little Em'ly tells us that she's exhausted from her visit with Mr. Roberts. She's also touched by the photo of her and her dad taken by him. She tells us how much she misses her mom and how lonely she finds her dad. She says that she always thought that if they lived their own lives and didn't have to worry about each other, it'd be the best way for them to live their lives. But now, she says, she sees that he's more lonely than ever. She also says that her mom left her a letter, but she hid it in a shell because she thought she could ignore it. But suddenly, someone stands beside her and agrees to help her. She promises to make up for missing her birthday and to celebrate her birthday when she gets back. She adds that her baby has grown up to be a beautiful girl, and that she just wants her daughter to grow up as well. She wants to make sure that her daughter is proud of her accomplishments, so that she can be a good mom to her daughter
