This chapter opens with the sound of a creak. It's because someone has just discovered a strange underground world. The narrator tells us that this is because no one has ever recorded what the underground world was like. Maybe, just maybe, people were tired of being evil and wanted to be kind. The sound of the creak is followed by a knock at the door. It turns out that the neighborhood committee has come to investigate a leak in the house. The noise of the knock makes the narrator feel like he's in another world.
