In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named "Kwan- yin" , who has been living in China for a long time. He has been suffering from an emotional disturbance, and he has asked for help from a doctor. He is accompanied by a young girl named "Guang-wai," who has come to visit him. The girl tells the doctor that she has grown taller, and the doctor has asked her to come in by herself. When the girl sees the doctor, she immediately follows him. She tells him that he has eaten something poisonous, and that he is suffering from emotional disturbance. He tells her that he sold the "listening statue" to her many years ago, and she tells him about the story of the woman who cut herself from the sky and attributed her flesh to the starving villagers. After eating the flesh, the villagers were lifted out of their sufferings and became healthier and strong. The story goes that years later, the woman's sage passed away, and her body was buried deep in the mountain. The young girl is afraid that the old woman is coming back to eat her flesh, and so she begs the doctor to let her go. The doctor refuses, saying that the woman is a "monster," and that the next person who will eat her will be the girl in red
