The narrator explains that a witch is a keeper of venomous insects, which are poisonous to humans. He says that he's determined that no one will find out about his mother's witchcraft, because it's such a waste of their time. He adds that people tend to hate witches because they're seen to be evil, and that's why they tend to stay away from them. This is the gist of the narrator's story: the woman in the house is a witch who uses insects to keep her insects away from humans. She's also rumored to have made a human-like creature out of the insects, and she probably used it to kill the man in order to make him dumber.
