The Underground Man enters. He tells the Underground Man that he's here, and that he likes him so much that he almost beat him to death, but that he doesn't want to go back because he still owes him money. He's exhausted, he says, and he wants to be alone. He apologizes for not being a friend when he was a kid, and says that he wishes that his parents would like him a little bit. He says that his mother hated him and even cut a scarf that she gave him, but he still blames his mother for her death. He blames himself for making excuses for himself, and asks if he can just leave him alone to think about his inner self.
