In this chapter, we learn that Beiglang was born in a poor neighborhood in Shanghai, and that he was raised in a shack. He is embarrassed to be dining with his brother, who does not understand him. He tells his brother that he has found out that he does not like places like his brother's. He also tells him that he would not have invited his brother to his house if he had told him he hated such places.
