In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist, Kiyo, and his companion, Taruna. Kiyo is very excited to be introduced to his new friend, because he has heard that the protagonist's diet is very strict. He tells his companion that he must eat something warm to keep him warm, and Kiyo agrees, saying that it is a good thing that he is not getting a warm meal. He also tells Kiyo that he cannot be strict with his diet because it is not good for his health. When Kiyo tells him about the strange doll that he has just bought, he exclaims that the doll is a local charm, and that parents would give it to their children so that they would not be tempted to harm their children. He then goes on to say that he will wait outside while Kiyo takes a picture of the bridge over the nakabashi river, and he asks Kiyo to go home with him. When he returns home, he is glad to see that Kiyo has bought the doll, as it will protect him from any harm.
