The narrator tells us that he's still in love with Clara, but he realizes that she's not as strong as she used to be. Clara's face is pale, and he can't remember her shining image. He asks Clara to come out to see him. Clara is worried about her mother, who has fallen down the stairs, fractured her calf, and is in a lot of pain. Clara thanks the narrator for his help, and they're going to be together forever. Clara tells the narrator that her mother has been longing for her to come see her, but that due to various circumstances, she won't be able to do so. She's happy to have him with her, Clara says. The narrator says that it was the two of them who abandoned him, and that the one who ran to him is now running to him. He's finally found Clara, and she tells him that he has touched his heart for the very first time.
