The chapter opens with a flashback to the day of Nemo's birth. Nemo and his wife are on their way to the hospital when Nemo tells them that his daughter is fine and that he's not at the hospital anymore. Nemo tells his wife to make sure she takes good care of herself and that she goes to the doctor whenever she needs to. He also tells her to make a party for him and his family since they've lived in the city for so long. He asks his wife what she's going to do with the party, and she tells him that she'll make flowers and paper chains for the party. She also tells him to make some dashi, which is a broth made from seaweed and green chilis. She tells her husband that they're going to make dashi for dinner, too, and they'll eat it with the rice. She's so excited that she can't wait to eat. She asks her husband if he'd like to eat some of the dashi and he says yes. He tells her that he loves green peppers, and that's why he likes dashi so much. He's also excited to eat this dashi because it's very mild, and it pairs well with his favorite dish, rice. He thanks his wife for throwing the party and says that he hopes her handkerchief is happy. He says he'll write a thank you note to her, but then he starts to write a recipe book. It's been so long since he saw his wife, and he worries that she won't come back to school.
