Tsumugi wakes up in the middle of the night to find that his father has left for a trip to his grandmother's house. He's hungry and wants to go back to school, but his father won't let him because he's on a trip. He tells him to go to the beach, where he can have some fresh air and eat some fresh fish. He also tells him that he should be friends with everyone since he doesn't like his friend, Yumi, very much. Yumi comes out of the house, and Tsumeugi asks if she's popular. Tsumaugi says that she is, but that she comes from a family that's not very nice. He says that he wants to be friends, but he feels like a mean, mean person sometimes. He thinks he should run away if he sees her, but then he thinks maybe he should just talk to her. He feels like he'd be okay if he could separate them, but if he can't, then he should try to be a good person, too. He wants to eat some fish, and he asks if they can sit down to eat. They have a snack, and Yumi says that it's a dish called "satsu ma" , which means "sweet lotus root." Yumi thinks that this dish is really good, but she wants to know if she can make it herself. She wants to make it with daikon radish, and she asks her father if he'll say it for her.
