The next morning, the Governess is in her hotel room, preparing to go to work. She is surprised to find herself alone with Mr. Dixon, who has just returned from a trip to the Solomon Islands. The Governess tells him that she has been working very hard, and that she is excited to see him again. She asks him if he likes her, and he tells her that he does, but that she should not worry about it because he is doing his best abroad. He then asks her if she has anyone she likes, and she says that she does. She then asks if she wants to know who that person is, and when he says no, she asks him to leave her alone.
