In the second half of the scene, we learn that the rules of the tournament are to eliminate half the contestants in order to increase the number of people in the top half. In other words, if you're in the bottom half, you can't compete with the best of the best. This is a big change from the first half, where you could compete with anyone in the world and still have a chance of winning. The other half, on the other hand, will have to compete with people who aren't as good as they are. This means that you'll have to work harder and harder to get to the top of the heap. So you've got to work even harder to make it into the top 50. And that's just the beginning of the process.
