The chapter opens with a soliloquy by a young man named Shuyin, who is studying medicine at the university. He says that he wants to be a doctor someday, but that he is afraid that he will not be able to do so because he is too strong. Shuyin tells the young man that the purpose of medicine is to cultivate immortality, and that the people in the world are trying to kill and fight for that purpose. He tells Shuyin to stop whining, and Shuyin agrees. The young man says that there are many herbs that can be used directly, but they are poisonous, so only the purest of them can be refined. The first step is to order a pill, but Shuyin knows that there is a failure rate with this first step. He goes to the medicine refining factory, but he does not know if the first step will work. He orders a spirit tonic pill, which is a first step in refining medicine. He explains that refining medicine is extremely difficult, because only two people have managed to do this in the entire realm. If Shuyin had enough resources, he would have a better chance to become a pharmacist. He notes that there were nine areas that still needed to be resolved before he could continue refining medicine, and only after all nine areas are resolved can he continue refining the medicine.
