In this chapter, Caixuan tells the gang that he has come to tell them about the theft of spirit-tailed chickens belonging to the master of the mountain. He wants them to work together to catch the thief, but he also wants to give the thief a special pendant that he got as a child. He says that he will give the chicken thief the pendant if anyone is able to catch him. He also says that if they work together, they can keep the thief at bay. He then proposes that they form a special team of ten ribbons to mark the spot where the thief will be caught. The ribbons serve as a token for the team.
