In this short scene, the young lovers discuss their plans for the future. The young lovers are about to go to bed when they are interrupted by the sound of a man's voice. The voice is that of Mr. Naruse, who has fallen asleep in the middle of a conversation with the young women. The narrator is sure that the man will soon become a "he wants.co" , and that he will be with someone else. He asks the young men if they would like to go for a walk, and they all agree that they would. They go to the stairs, and the narrator is surprised to find that the young man is already on his way to the bedroom. As he is about to leave, he is interrupted by a voice from the other side of the room. It is the voice of the young woman, who is crying. She asks the narrator to kiss her, and he responds by saying that he would rather kiss her than kiss her. He then goes on to say that he is going to work for the man, who he knows is looking for a partner. He says that he already knows that the other man is not looking for any partner, but for a "nother partner." The young men begin to rub their hands against the sleeping man, trying to get him to move, but he is unable to do so.
