In the middle of the night, the narrator is overcome with worry. He is sure that he has reached his "breakthrough" and that he is about to enter the "heavenly tribulation" . The thunder and the rumbling of the sky remind him of the impending doom. He wonders if the heavenly tribulation is the same as the "golden core stage" , and he wonders if lu still cares for him. He realizes that men are dishonest and pretend to be asleep in order to make him feel better. He also realizes that lu has been sleeping in the dreams of his sister, and wonders if he is trying to encourage him. The narrator then realizes that he had come to guard "huan'er" during her tribulation and wonders why the weather is so bad with the wind and rain. He feels confident that he will make it through the tribulation.
