In this short scene, we get a glimpse of what it's like to live in the real world. It's dark, everything is dark, and everything is moving at a snail's pace. The narrator can't see his own hands, so he has no way of knowing if he's moving or not. He can hear the noises of the other creatures around him, and he can see that they're all moving at the same time. He's afraid that if he doesn't get out of the way, he'll die.
