We learn that the cave is very dangerous, but that it is their duty to enter it. They are both aware of the danger, but they do not want to risk their lives in the cave. When they enter the cave, they are surprised to find it is moving downwards. They wonder if the cave has been like this for a long time, and if the villagers have made it like the cave on the mountain. The cave is like an ancient bat colony, and the two men are afraid that the monster must have escaped down below the cliff. They look around the cave and see that there are animals inside the holes, and that the animals are larger than the rats. They decide to go down, but grandpa tells them not to get inside the cave because there is nothing they have gained.
