About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the monster pit, which is described as being so deep that it is difficult to see the bottom. The monster tells his grandfather that the pit is full of corpses and bones. He tells him that if they run into one or more of the monsters, they will be dishonorable to their ancestor, the great Qing yunzi. He also tells his granddaughter that she should not eat him because he is too small and tastes too good. He says that he will put candied fruit on his grave as an offering. He then tells his grandson that he and his granddaughter have learned that there is a monster in the pit and that they have come to destroy the monster for the benefit of the people. He adds that they will hurry up to find the emblem of the mythical blaze if they can retrieve it from the flames on the sleeves of the two young men who are supposed to be the disciples of the valley master
