The scene opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which Dr. Bledsoe, now a vampire, tries to convince Lockwood to return to the vampire's side of the house. Lockwood, however, refuses, saying that he has already left the house and that he will not return until he has regained his health. The flashback then shifts to the present, where Lockwood has returned to his former self. He has lost all of his weight, and he feels that he is no longer a vampire. He wishes that he could return to his old self, but he knows that he must first regain his health before he will be able to do so.
