About This Chapter
Kim Jong-il is dying, and his son-in-law tries to convince him that he is not the murderer. Kim says that he knows that he has only a day to live, and that he would have acted the same way if he had known that he had only a few hours to live. He tells his son to be careful not to mess things up, because during the time of the Joseon dynasty, ritual officials were the highest-ranking government officials in the country. Kim's son asks his father if he has found the murderer, and the old man replies that he does not know. He says that the governor of the ministry of Justice is there, and he asks if there is anyone out there who could be the real murderer. The old man says that if there were a real murderer, they would probably die unfairly. He then tells Kim that he found out that the jewels were missing, which is unfortunate, because Kim would have loved to have them if only he had taken them. He asks if they will look for the murderer now, and Kim says he will head back to his meeting with the national ritual officials. He explains that the case is not really about a grudge, but a murder with a grudge is a very serious act of revenge. He also says that Kim and his daughter are unlikely to be involved in the crime because they recently moved to the city, and it is unlikely that they planned the crime before they borrowed money from him. He adds that some of the jewels that were stolen were unique and he found someone who claimed to have received them as a gift.
