He tells the narrator that he heard a rumor about her having an affair. He says his wife wouldn't do anything like that, and he was upset when he heard that rumor. He asks if the rumor is true, and the narrator says it's nonsense. He adds that if he had the wrong idea, he'd never have to suffer for it.
