The scene opens in the hot and steamy camp of the company where the men are working. The hot springs and the hotter things in the camp make it difficult for the men to sleep. They are forced to lie on the ground and wait for the hot springs to warm up. As they wait, the men tease each other about how hard they are working and how much they are enjoying themselves.
