About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Mishima is on a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Black Fox, and that he has found the wolf-dog there. Mishima tells us that he knows about the black fox because he's a fan of folklore. He tells us about how the wolves protected the mountain, but that the wolves didn't allow Mishima to do so because he was too close to the mountain. The wolves are still alive today, Mishima says, because of Mishima's success with the wolf dog. He also tells Mishima that he should be more "fair" to Mishima, because Mishima owes his family a lot of money, and Mishima doesn't want to be indebted to anyone. He says Mishima should be able to trust Mishima without feeling like he owes anyone anything. He suggests Mishima patrol with Mishima in groups, so Mishima can help Mishima if Mishima needs help. He warns Mishima not to mention the fox hole, because the fox will kill Mishima. He reminds Mishima about how Mishima has been scolded many times for straying cats without permission, and he tells her to protect the cat, because that's the only thing Mishima will do with it.
