In this chapter, the young Ming-ling tries to convince his father that his mother's death was caused by his father's overdose of medicine. He tells the story of how his father used to be a peddler of medicine, and how his mother used to mix the medicine with his own. The poison in her body was so great that no one could find it, and she died. The shoe print found on the scene is the same shoe print as that found on Ming's father. Ming is convinced that his father is responsible for the death of his mother, and he tells him to compare the shoe print with the one found on his father. He also tells Ming that the marriage between Ming and his current wife has been annulled, and that the engagement between the two of them and their two daughters has also been annulled.
