In the middle of the night, Madame Bovary comes out of her hiding place. She's just been invited to a banquet for the emperor's dragon boat festival, and she's already decided to go. She tells the prince that she doesn't want to be a part of the royal family's dirty laundry, but she also tells him that she'd like to be invited to the banquet. He's shocked that she would want to go to such a big event, and he's even more shocked when she tells him she'll be staying away from the emperor. Madame Bavary's not so sure. She thinks that the emperor is angry at her for being so rude to him, and that she should ask her daughter to perform for the royal party.
