About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the protagonist, Eden, is an agent of the Bureau of Reclamation who travels across the world to train people in the art of gardening. He tells the students that within a year he will train them all into money making gardeners. He says that the 27 of them are the "119th generation" of gardeners, and that they will enter the profession when they are old enough to do so. He introduces them to the other students, who are apprentices, and tells them that he will be their instructor for the next term. The students are shocked to learn that he is a member of the security bureau, and they wonder why he would want to be their teacher. He explains that since the students are so confident, he will set a punishment if they fail. If they fail, they will forfeit their status as gardeners, transfer into the security bureaus, and be kicked out of the college. He warns the students not to overstress themselves, as he will kill them if they do.
