This chapter opens with a soliloquy by Confucius, in which he tells us that the test of the ninth class is over. He says that only three people ever have been able to pass the test, and that he is confident that he will pass the next test. He tells the audience that he has one last test to take before he can enter the ranks of the rich and famous.
