About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her son-in-law, Cai Ming-ling. The Governess tells him that her daughter, whom she calls "tian xing" , is not feeling well and cannot eat the cake that she has prepared for him. She asks him to go and see her, and he agrees. He goes to sit with the cake in the family room, which is covered in his pictures. He feels that his pictures cover everything about his life, and that his daughter knows everything about him, but he doesn't know how much she thinks about them. He says that he would like to take his daughter out to play, but if they get photographed, he knows that it will be difficult to get to the zoo, where he loves to go. He tells Cai that he once fell out of a car and got frightened to death by the lion. He also tells her not to go out alone with her, because the zoo has a food truck so they don't need to worry about getting out of the vehicle.
