In this chapter, we learn that the girl in question is a "country bumpkin" who has come to the city to "assimilate to the environment" . We learn that she is smart, and that she fights with her because she is afraid of losing the attention of the teacher and the other students. She even jumps infront of her to save her life when she is in danger. The girl is so smart that she has adapted to the school environment very quickly. The teacher and all of her classmates like her, and the girl is mad that she takes the attention from her. She often bullies her to keep the girl down, but she never realizes that not only does she fight with her, but that she even saves her life. This is the first time the girl has been in the city, and she looks like a "bumpkin" to the narrator. The first time she saw the girl, she looked down on the girl but she was very smart and adapted very quickly to the new environment. The narrator was mad at the girl for taking the attention off of him, and he often bullied the girl to keep her from fighting with him, but he never realized that she did not only fight with him but even jumped in front of him and saved his life.
