About This Chapter
In this chapter, the kami-of-the-sun, the great master of the sun, tells his followers that he will not allow the spirits of his dead wife, Amaterasu, to enter the world. He tells them that even though he is the great creator of the world, he cannot allow them to "infest this world" with the "spirits of the dead" . He reminds them that they have been protecting him all this time, and that he fell from the cliff many times. He asks them to stay back and not let him defeat them. He says he will tear his body again if they continue to protect him. The other kami join in to perform the ritual, but they worry that it will become the "world family of death" , and they do not want to risk disgracing the world by worrying about such things. The kami who has come to help them are the ones who are in love with each other and want to die. They also want to protect the baby they just had. They all want to help each other, but the only person they have left is their daughter, who blames her failure for the failure of the ritual. She pretends to be her brother and tries to save her mother, but she is too weak to do so. She is a miko, or servant of the family, and she is unable to do anything for herself. She hears the voice of a kami in her hair and realizes that she is a failure
