Back in New York City, Eliot's narrator is panting. He's just seen a bunch of guys beating up a woman in the street, and he's worried about what's going to happen to Toman and his gang. Eliot tells us that he saw Toman fight alone once, but now he can't even get to him because the gang has become a criminal enterprise. Eliot says that he used to think that Toman was fighting alone for all of them, but that's no longer the case. Eliot realizes that this is what Mikey was trying to do when he said he was going to create a new "age of delinquencies" .
