In this chapter, we learn that Doji, the evil yokai from the previous chapter's soliloquy, has decided to "shuten" and "doji" , meaning drink, in order to "concoct the confounding challenge" that Hirohito has given him. The two young men, known throughout town as "liorimaru" and the "koheinosuke," are to fill the jar with water and drink it without using the three-hundred-year-old bottle of water that they've been using to fill their drinking glasses. The challenge is to "chase the tiger from the screen" and to "keep this day in his hearts" . The men agree to the challenge, and Hirohio tells them that they will "forev er" keep this day "in your hearts" as a "precious memory of youth." The men are shocked at the idea that they would want to "escape reality" and spend their days frolicking on the beach. They're also shocked that the men would even think of such a thing as "memories of youth" when they'd rather spend their time studying and working hard. They don't understand why they're being asked to sacrifice their youth for something so trivial as a challenge. They think it's silly that they should sacrifice their "youth" for something that's so trivial. They also think that if they put 80 percent alcohol in the jar, the concentration would drop. They decide to "get rid of some" of the alcohol by "stirring single drop" of water into the jar. After a few sips, the men are back to their "under-class men" and drink again. They joke that the "sense of freedom" that comes
