About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've heard from the narrator, but now he's back on the road again. He's in the middle of a run-down ice cream shop, and he can't bear to leave the ice cream on the counter any longer. He asks the manager if he can keep the booze in the cooler, and the manager says yes, but he'll have to buy some more ice cream from the store. The manager then tells the narrator that they're going to take a bunch of bottles of beer from the guy who left them at his place. The narrator is all, "I'll die if I drink this stuff" , and then he remembers that cooling his crotch cools his body down, which is a good way to stay cool. He says that's the only thing he can think of to do to cool his body, and that he'd like to do it again. The bartender chimes in that the guy left the booze at his house, but the narrator doesn't know what to say. He doesn' t want to tell the bartender what's going on, so he just says that he was "young and stupid" . He then asks the bartender if he spilled the booze on the floor, and when the bartender says he didn't, the narrator says he was too young and stupid to know what was going on. He goes on to say that alcohol is absorbed in the stomach and in the small intestine , so it's easier to get drunk through the latter than through the former. So, if you're drinking through the stomach, you'll get drunk more quickly, but if you drink through the smaller intestine, you can get drunk faster. So the narrator tells the bartender not to hit him, because this is the only way to get wasted. He wants to get the booze out of his system ASAP, even if he has to cut it off. He hears someone outside the door
